Slaves are bound to this world; slaves do not have liberty or boldness, as St. Paul used the words (borrowing from Roman culture). In Roman society, one was liberated if one was a citizen of the body of people. If you were outside the body, you did not have liberty. Thus for Paul, and the Christian, one is liberated--one can speak with confidence--most properly if one is in the Mystical Body of Christ. Freedom is only found here, in the Body of Christ. One may read this...What a profoundly lovely column. One may read this and it is like looking into a pond. But when you look further and reflect on what is there, it is deeper and deeper and more inviting. When the disciples were locked inside the Upper Room - I believe they had damaged but real faith and love. What they were awaiting was the gift of the Spirit - the gift of Hope.
